Software development with Laravel and AI: our technology stack

Laravel for the backend, Anthropic Claude for conversational AI, Tailwind + Alpine.js for the frontend. A considered technical choice, not a trend.

The 4 pillars of our stack

  • Laravel for the PHP backend

Eloquent ORM, Query Builder, Queues, Service Providers, built-in testing suite, Telescope. We have been using Laravel since version 4.

  • Anthropic Claude as the AI layer

Anthropic Claude for reasoning and natural language, with custom tools (tool use) in the products that call for them, such as AraLith COS. AI is not a gadget in our stack: it is a layer of the architecture, used where it is needed.

  • Tailwind + Alpine or React for the frontend

Tailwind CSS for the design system, Alpine.js or React for reactivity, Blade for server-side templating, Vite for the build. Fast, maintainable, no JS fatigue.

  • Cloud infrastructure + CI/CD

Cloud-first (no physical servers), automated CI/CD, encrypted backups. Solid infrastructure without unnecessary complexity.

Why Laravel (and not Node, Django or Go)

Every year someone asks us why we still use PHP. The answer is pragmatic: Laravel is the framework that lets us deliver faster, maintain more easily and hire more selectively.

With PHP 8.2+, performance is adequate for the application workloads we handle. The Composer ecosystem is mature, and Laravel is well documented and consistent to use. And Laravel developers in Italy are easier to find (and train) than Rust or Elixir developers.

It is not technological religion. It is a choice of efficiency.

AI in the stack: why Claude and not GPT-4

We tested GPT-4, GPT-4o, Gemini Pro and Claude. For our use cases — reasoning over long documents (contracts, technical specifications, project documentation), complex tool calling and deterministic responses — Claude won by a significant margin.

Context window management, the ability to follow complex system instructions and precision in tool calling are critical when you build an assistant that works on business content and data.

Our AiAgentService in Laravel abstracts the model: we can switch from Claude 3 Sonnet to Claude 4 in minutes, without touching the business logic.

Frequently asked questions about our development stack

Because it is a mature, well-documented framework with a broad ecosystem: that means less code to invent, more proven components and more predictable development times. But the choice of stack follows from the project, not from a preference: if a requirement calls for a different technology, we use that one.

Yes, in two ways. A widespread stack like Laravel cuts development time thanks to proven components, and above all it removes the most expensive risk: dependence on a single vendor. Thousands of developers in Italy know Laravel — if tomorrow you want to change partner or hire an in-house developer, your software stays maintainable.

As an accelerator, not a substitute: requirements analysis, writing repetitive code, generating tests. Every line produced with the help of AI is reviewed by the developer, who is accountable for the result. The benefit for the client is faster delivery on the standard parts, with the same technical accountability on the critical parts.

Yes: we deliver complete source code, a Git repository with the change history and technical documentation. The stack is open source, so any developer who knows Laravel can pick up development. No hidden proprietary components, no licence restrictions on the delivered work.
